- Boer War
- /ˈbɔ wɔ/ (say 'baw waw)
noun either of two wars fought between the British and the Boers in southern Africa.
1. a war in which Great Britain fought against the Transvaal and the province of Orange Free State, 1899–1902.
2. a war between Great Britain and the Transvaal, 1880–81.
In the Boer War that began in 1899, the Australian colonies sent approximately 16 000 troops, mostly mounted riflemen, to southern Africa. They participated in the British advance to occupy the capitals of the two Boer republics, and in the campaigns against the Boer commandos during the war's guerilla phase from late 1900. Although at first enthusiastically supported in Australia, the war had aroused widespread opposition by the time the Boers surrendered in May 1902. Some 600 Australians died in the 1899–1902 war, about half of them from disease.
